Bill Scheffler for State Representative

SCHEFFLER NOMINATED
FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Proclaims "it's time to step up and get things done."

Norwalk, CT - Local Democrats met at Norwalk City Hall on Tuesday night to help launch Bill Scheffler's bid for State Representative in Connecticut's 136th District (Westport/Norwalk). Scheffler, a longtime Westport resident and activist, announced his candidacy vowing to "make our local issues our State's priorities."

Mr Scheffler, a member of Westport's Representative Town Meeting since 1993, was nominated by Westport First Selectman Diane Farrell, who noted how critical it was for the district to have a representative in Hartford who would be effective in getting State attention and support for issues that affect us.

Scheffler said that as a local elected official, he was acutely aware that many of the serious problems facing the region could not be solved by communities acting alone. "Whether it's the alarming growth of traffic on I-95 and the attendant environmental and economic problems, siting of cell towers or noise barriers, or the purchase of open space, we need the State as a partner. We have to make our local issues our State's priorities."

Scheffler pledged to "join the Democratic majority" in Hartford in bringing about meaningful property tax reform and vowed to maximize state funding for local education issues including school construction and special education. "We must show our commitment to these important issues - for our towns, for our children, and for our future."

Scheffler said that the issues that led him to run for the State Legislature are brought home to him by the challenges facing his own family, as well as other long-time residents. "I am running to speak up for senior citizens, who are concerned that rising property taxes - not to mention prescription drug prices - will drive them from the community, while my children's schools are under pressure to provide quality education in the face of overcrowding, major school construction, and spiraling special education costs. I don't believe that we have made our case adequately in Hartford. It's time to have a State Representative who will step up and get things done."

Scheffler, an attorney in private practice, is a member of the Westport Representative Town Meeting (RTM) and is chair of its Planning and Zoning and Long Range Planning Committees and a member of the Education and Public Protection Committees. He previously served as chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He is currently President of the Westport Rotary Club. An author of two books, Scheffler is married to Ann Sheffer and has two children: Elizabeth (14) and Anne (10).
